World Press Photo of the Year 2001

PRIZEWINNERS WORLD PRESS PHOTO CONTEST 2002

The international jury of the 45th annual World Press Photo Contest has selected as World Press Photo of the Year 2001 a black & white picture by the Danish photographer ERIK REFNER for the daily Berlingske Tidende. The picture, taken in June in a refugee camp in Pakistan, shows the ody of a one-year-old boy being washed and wrapped in a white cloth in preparation for the burial. The child’s family, originally from North Afghanistan, had sought refuge from the political situation and the consequences of the drought in their country. The picture is also part of a story awarded 2nd Prize in the category People in the News Stories.

World Press Photo is regarded as the most prestigious international contest in professional press photography. The prizewinning work was chosen out of a record number of 49,235 pictures submitted by 4,171 photographers from 123 countries. More than half (55,7%) of the images was entered in digitized format (in 2001, 27,5%).The judging took place in Amsterdam 3-14 February. The jury gave prizes in 9 theme categories to photographers of 18 nationalities from:
